I really enjoyed this book, and I would consider it more of a cross between steampunk and fantasy, than the regular steampunk genre. The worldbuilding is fantastic - the types of artificial creatures that can be made, called matics, the strange, werewolves, witches, zombies and fae (?) The story is told from a variety of viewpoints, which I loved. And it was very interesting to me to get the viewpoint of the bad guy. Most of the books that I have read these days, you don't know who the bad guy is until the end. It was actually kind of interesting to know who he was, even if he was really creepy. While the major story was tied up at the end, it looks to me like there is plenty of room for more stories to be told.
